Hey, thanks for stopping by!

My name is Brian Donovan and I am the owner of Online Fitness Coach. I love helping people reach their health and fitness goals. That passion led me to open my first personal training business, Brian Donovan Fitness, LLC in 2008, and since then I have coached hundreds of clients to a healthier lifestyle both in-person and online.

A little about me… In 2014, I was voted Chicago’s “Best Personal Trainer” by Chicago Reader magazine, Best Of Chicago edition.

I have published over 50 fitness articles and have been featured in a variety of media publications such as The PTDC (Personal Trainer Development Center), Bach Performance, and Voyage Chicago.

I am a Certified Online Trainer through the Online Trainer Academy, a Precision Nutrition Certified Coach, a graduate of the National Personal Training Institute, a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, a Poliquin BioSignature Practitioner, and a CrossFit Certified Coach. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and a minor in Business from Michigan State University.

My story is a little further down the page if you care to read it but I would rather hear about you! Ask me a question or tell me what your #1 fitness or nutrition goal is HERE.

MY STORY

When I graduated from college in 2006, I moved to Chicago and got my first desk job… and quickly proceeded to gain 20 lbs. within the first 6 months. Considering I played 3 sports in high school, and had kept myself in good shape all through college, 20 lbs. in 6 months was a wake-up call for me. If I didn’t do something fast, it was only going to get worse.

Commuting from the city to the suburbs an hour both ways every day was taking a toll on me. Not to mention I was the new owner of a cute but mischievous puppy who took pleasure in destroying my apartment while I was at work and waking me up in the middle of the night. By the time I got home each day, I had clean up duties, a dog to walk, I was hungry, and I was tired. I told myself I just didn’t have the time to workout.

The truth was, I had no system in place to ensure that my health was being made a priority. When I did make it to the gym, there was no rhyme or reason to the structure of my workouts. I had no understanding of periodization, compound vs. isolation exercises, linear progression, etc. I would walk in, skip the warm-up, skip legs, hit the bench press, do some bicep curls… in other words, I was completely wasting my time.

When it came to nutrition, all I knew was that I was supposed to eat a lot of protein if I wanted to put on muscle. I had no concept of macronutrient ratios, and I certainly did not understand body composition or how to gain lean muscle without also gaining fat. The result was a little extra muscle and A LOT OF EXTRA BODY FAT.

To keep a long story short, after wasting far too many hours in the gym with little results to show for it, I became interested in exercise science and nutrition, which then led to becoming interested in habit formation. Pretty soon I was hooked and started reading everything I could get my hands on. I began applying the principles I was learning, and soon I had lost the 20 lbs. I’d gained.

This was the beginning of my fitness journey.

I knew deep down that a desk job wasn’t for me. I wanted to work one-on-one with people to help them live healthier lifestyles. I wanted to show people that you can be busy, and still make time for your health and fitness AND get great results with the right plan and execution. So I went back to school and completed 500 hours studying Exercise Science and Nutrition at the National Personal Training Institute in Chicago, and became a Certified Personal Trainer.

Since then, I have been fortunate enough to be able to help hundreds of men and women all over the world achieve amazing results with my Online Fitness Coach program. I’ve done this not through gimmicks or magic pills, but by understanding my client’s needs, communicating, developing the right plan for each individual, and then helping them to see it through.

Training and nutrition stuff aside, I love climbing and hiking, singing and playing my acoustic guitar, traveling with my wife Liz, rough housing with my dog Bumper (no longer a mischievous puppy), and spending time with friends and family.

Thanks for taking the time to read my story!
